“Where are they Now?” Series (1)

Matt Hellerer:
A graduate of the class of 1975, he has not drifted far. By day, Matt works in the Chemistry Lab vigorously; by night, well… he is still working vigorously in the Chemistry Lab. Sometimes referred to as the “Running, Chemistry Loving Yoda”. Matt is dedicated to his work at St. Joe’s. He is about as original as they may come. Many fear him, but all respect him. He can disperse a band of misfits like no other.

After graduating from St. Joe’s, Matt went off to college to receive a culinary degree. He can make a cuisine like no man. Living in North Buffalo his whole life, Matt invented the word trouble in his neck of the woods.

But, as it shows, his true passion is his life on the track. Matt was apart of the team when the legendary Bob Ivory was at the helm, leading his teams to among the top in the nation. Matt won many races back in his day including the All Catholic titles in both Cross Country and Track. Now, the head coach of both Cross Country and Track at his alma mater, he has recently led his track team to a Monsignor Martin League Championship in 2011. Matt is not afraid to yell at an athlete if there is potential within. Although he many seem insane at first, he is a genuine man none-the-less.

Among his years of coaching, Matt also coached the Canisius College team for 3 seasons before returning to St. Joe’s to coach the students he also taught. As fearful as he may be, I know no greater man who has had such a positive influence on my life. And for that, I thank him as, not only my coach and teacher but also, as my friend.
